YSRCP, Don't Mess With Andhra Cops

YSRCP, Don't Mess With Andhra Cops

The election season in Andhra Pradesh is witnessing political activity along with new controversies everyday. The YSR Congress Party and the ruling Telugu Desam Party are playing a tu-tu-main-main game where one attacks or creates a controversy and the other makes a counter move. In the process, the law enforcement agencies along with the Election Commission too are being forcefully involved.

Over the past few months, YSR Congress Party has been trying to portray an image of AP Police being in the grip of the TDP and acting in its favour. In the knife attack case, YSRCP President Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy and his associates ensured that the narrative involved demeaning and defaming AP police including the DGP. Now again, the YSR Congress has blamed Police officials of foulplay in the investigation of his uncle, Y.S. Vivekananda Reddy's suspicious death.

In his latest attack, YSR Congress MP Vijay Sai Reddy said that the TDP is ferrying crores of money and distributing it to people during the election campaign through Police vans and cars. Not stopping at that, YSRCP leaders alleged that AP Chief Minister and TDP Chief N. Chandrababu Naidu is also filling his helicopter with money bags and getting it distributed during his roadshows in different districts.

In all the three narratives that the YSRCP leaders has carefully crafted a narrative against the AP Police. In fact, the party is ensuring that it shows the state government officials as those acting in favour of the TDP. However, many in political circles are surprised at the mudslinging of YSRCP against government officials.

While they could be working in favour of TDP, YSRCP needs to understand that government officials are a crucial votebank. They were partly responsible for throwing Chandrababu out of power in 2004. On the other hand, YSRCP is also missing a logic that if the party comes to power, it will have to work with the same government departments and same officials again. So, will the YSRCP wake up to this reality and restrict itself to politics or continue its tirade against government officials?
