A slap in the face of Azharuddin

Former Indian skipper and Congress MP Mohd Azharuddin was directed to pay a fine of Rs 15 lakh by a Delhi court for wasting its time in connection with a cheque bounce case.

The order was delivered after Azhar told to judge that the matter had been settled with the complainant outside the court. Azhar ignored the non-bailable warrants issued against him for not appearing before the bench, which led to hefty fine.

In 2008, Azharuddin has decided to sell a property in the posh area of Bandra in Mumbai, which is jointly owned by him and his estranged wife Sangeeta Bijlani. According to the market estimates, this property is worth around Rs 5 crore.

Sanjay Solanki, a Delhi-based businessman, who wants to purchase the property has paid Rs 1.5 crore in advance to Azharuddin. Few days after this deal got finalized, Azhar refused to sell the property, instead promised to Solanki that he would return the advance amount and also issued a cheque of Rs 1.5 crore. But the cheque bounced. Solanki brought the matter to the notice of Azhar, and the MP apologised before issuing a fresh cheque. But the issue wasn't resolved as the cheque bounced again. This repeated for atleast three times. Fed up Azhar's behaviour, Solanki has approached the court finally.
