Veteran writer, versatile actor Gollapudi Maruthi Rao has breathed his last in Chennai. 80-year-old Maruti Rao had played multiple roles. He was a theatre actor, screenwriter, dramatist, playwright, and dialogue writer in films. He had published several plays, playlets, novels, story volumes, children stories. He had written essays as well.
He also wrote weekly column "Jeevana Kaalam" (The Living Times) in Andhrajyothy, a kaleidoscopic study of contemporary social and political issues for over 24 years. He had also penned his autobiography Amma Kadupu Challaga, a 550-page compendium of his memoirs.
He had won several literary awards and honours for his literary work. He had won prestigious Nandi awards for six times for Best Story, for Best Comedian, for Best Character Actor, for Best Dialogue, for Best Screenplay and for Best actor (Television). He had also worked for All India Radio.
Gollapudi Maruti Rao had acted in over 230 Telugu films. He acted in Sekhar Kammula directorial Leader alongside Rana. He acted in films like Samsaram Oka Chadrangam, Intlo ramayya Veedilo Krishnaiah, Gudachari No. 1, Prema, Prema Pusthakam. He was last seen in Aadi Saikumar's film Jodi (2019).
Honourable Chief Minister Sri K Chandrashekhar Rao has expressed shock over the death of noted writer, actor and columnist Gollapudi Maruthi Rao. The CM hailed the services rendered by Maruthi Rao to the Telugu literature, drama, and cinema. The Plays and research articles Maruthi Rao wrote on Telugu literature have guided the development of Telugu language and literature. The CM has conveyed his condolences to members of the bereaved family.
