US: Indian student to face 10yrs jail for damaging computers

A 27-year-old Indian student, named Vishwanath Akuthota, has been residing in New York on a student visa since long. He has been pleaded guilty for intentionally causing damage to more than 50 computers in a college. The total damage was up to USD 58,000. The incident took place in New York capital state Albany and the damage happened due to inserting a "USB Killer" device.

He was arrested in North Carolina and was in custody since February 2019. Vishwanath will be facing up to 10 years of jail time from August and a fine of USD 2,50,000, along with a term of the post-imprisonment supervised release of up to three years.

The student was guilty of causing damage to computers owned by The Collge of St Rose said the US Attorney Grant Jaquith. It is reported that the student has intentionally inserted a USB killer into 66 computers and the device will send a command causing the PC's onboard capacitors to rapidly charge and discharge on a loop.

This will, in turn, overload the capacity and destroy the computer' USB port and electrical system. Vishwanath intentionally did the damage while recording himself with his iPhone. He was also heard saying 'I will kill this guy' in the video.
